10/2/12 NYC and Sandy Hook

Hi everyone,
Today was a travelling day. When I say travelling day, I mean that it was an all-day affair. Sadly, yesterday there was a strong westerly wind that prevented us from heading up the Sound to New York City, and with today being calmer we decided to make the trip. We left Port Jeff early this morning and proceeded west up to NYC and beyond to Sandy Hook. It was cloudy when we left and it had been steadily worsening to a light rain that was just strong enough to make everything damp. Even so, going through NYC was an incredible experience. We went under countless bridges, saw the Statue of Liberty, the Freedom towers, and many other amazing sights. We took over 200 photos with the camera today alone! During the crossing from NYC to Sandy Hook, it got slightly rough and Serena got a little seasick, but other than that it was a smooth ride all the way through. Tomorrow looks like it is supposed to be rainy and windy, so I think we will be staying here at Sandy Hook. In order for Julia and I to complete most of our schoolwork before we leave the country, we need to work multiple hours each day, so it looks like tomorrow is going to be a school day. Below are a few of the photos that we took today.

A prison barge with inmates on it. On the upper left corner you can see a fenced area used for  recreation and basketball.

A cool abandoned mansion along the river.

A highway in NYC. The interesting thing is that there is an entire forest on top of it.

The sky gondolas that carry people across the river to Roosevelt island.

The Chrysler building from a few blocks away.

The new Freedom tower shrouded in fog.

A few schooners docked on the river.

A shot of the skyline as we left.

Does this picture really need a caption?

Julia and I in front of the Statue of Liberty.
My apologies for the terrible photography. It was continually raining so we had to keep the camera dry and as you can see from the Freedom tower shot there was some fog as well. Hopefully next time there will be better weather and we will be able to take some nicer photos.

Special thanks to our neighbor Danny for taking this picture as we were leaving the dock in Branford.
